I was driving Graham to school
And we were stopped at a traffic light
When I happened to look
In my rearview mirror.
In the car behind us I saw
A teenage boy with Down Syndrome
Who had a pair of earbuds on.
I assumed the driver of the car
Was the boy's father,
And this man was looking at the boy.
He was looking at the boy
With the most loving smile,
And he touched the boy's chin
And they smiled at each other.
They looked at each other
In such a loving way,
I was struck by it.
I saw more in those fifteen seconds,
I saw more in that instance,
Than words could ever tell.
There was such light shining.
There was such warmth felt.
There was such joy between them.
In the midst of road construction
And the resulting tangled traffic,
In the midst of getting kids to school on time
And getting on with making money,
There are other things going on.
These are not the important things
Amidst the rest that do not matter.
We make it all important, and as we do,
We find significance and meaning
Everywhere we look.
